Molly Ringworm’s roots are in Atlantic City. Johnny, Andrew and me spent our weekends all through high school and college playing music in its bars to fill our gas tanks and make tuition payments. Before he became our drummer, we first hung out with Michael after a show at Tony’s Baltimore Grill (now a pre-show ritual for take out; our Fret Fast at any Anchor Rock Club show is pizza grease). Atlantic City is the only place we really feel great when we play.
Perfect Dog is our first release where it feels like we found what we’re supposed to sound like. Over the last 2 years of bringing these songs to life, it was creatively collaborative. The farther along we got, the easier new material came together. The album has this overarching theme of control. The need for control has plagued me since I was a child; ask any elementary school classmate what they remember about me and they’ll probably say that I was bossy. I was programmed to be managerial and high strung. I have a deep desire to have control of myself and my emotions, and sometimes of other people’s. But the reality is you can never fully be in control of anyone or anything. The album follows the unlearning of that, and the relinquishing of that need for perfection.
The single “Passenger Princess” acts as the total opposite of how I’d normally see myself—a fantasy of placing all the power in someone else’s hands. I hope it makes it onto some listeners' make-out playlists.
