issue 8: magic + mystery

statements

hello,

i have a few statements to make.

first, because apparently i need to:

the diving horse takes submissions from all over atlantic city and, honestly, all over the world at this point. that means sometimes something critical comes in about a place i personally love, a friend’s business, whatever. i still run it if it’s fair and it isn’t hateful or targeted at a person.

that is the whole point of accepting work outside my own opinions. if i only published things i agreed with, this wouldn’t be journalism. it would be my diary with ads.

so no, i’m not going to warn anyone ahead of time when something critical is coming, including people i like, including funders, including anyone. the second i start making exceptions based on who is asking or what they can offer me, the whole thing stops being fair.

if that costs me relationships or money, that’s the cost.

okay. statement two:

ISSUE 8 IS OPEN FOR PREORDER!!!!!

the next diving horse is MAGIC + MYSTERY IN ATLANTIC CITY. inside, we get into the jersey devil, satanic panic, the steel pier, fortunes, hauntings, ghost stories, local trouble, tarot, haircuts, boxing, and a cocktail recipe by angela dellorco that has been blurred online for public safety.

preorders are $5. you can pick yours up at tony’s baltimore grill and get a beer or wine on the horse, pick it up at angeloni’s club madrid, or have it mailed to your door.

every preorder goes directly into printing and producing the magazine. soon i will get to make the much more pleasant announcement that it is physically in print. but every dollar counts this time around because things are tight, chief financial officer, jim, fell ill this week and racked up some hefty vet bills lol.

statement three:

THE WHOLE HORSE IS CURRENTLY $150 FOR ONE YEAR.

that includes all four print issues, every digital edition, a full year of the paid substack, every mini-mag and bonus release, a diving horse tote, a birthday treat, and surprises in the mail throughout the year.

the paid substack normally costs $180 by itself. i did not consult a business school before setting these prices.

join the whole horse by sunday night and i’ll also send you a vintage atlantic city postcard from my personal collection, probably dating somewhere between the 1890s and 1960s. prices for the whole horse will go up in january.

finally, some ordinary housekeeping:

the events calendar is being updated constantly with shows, civic meetings, community events, strange regional attractions, and useful things happening around atlantic city and south jersey.

the new jersey family resource guide and nonjudgmental voter guide are also available free on the site. use them, send them to somebody, tell me what i missed.

everything can be found at divinghorseac.com.

thank you for reading, buying the magazine, sending things in, disagreeing intelligently, and otherwise keeping the horse alive.

claire
